Baby’s Nighttime "Script"

Every baby has a "script" for how falling asleep should go. These are sleep associations, the specific conditions their brain links with dozing off.

How the "script" gets written:

  • The pairing effect: If a baby falls asleep while feeding or rocking 100 times, their brain strongly links those actions with sleep.
  • The "Now what?" moment: When they wake between natural sleep cycles (as we all do), they need the same conditions from their "script" to fall back asleep.

Sleep associations aren't inherently good or bad. With sleep training the aim is a script your child can follow without you, and I'd think of their brain as following the one it already has rather than resisting yours.

The Three Keys to Sleep

Think of sleep as requiring three keys to unlock. Your baby needs enough Sleep pressure (tiredness from being awake), the right signal from their Body Clock (the internal rhythm that says "it's night time"), and Total Daily Sleep (the amount of sleep your baby needs across naps and night sleep). Problems happen when these keys are out of sync.

The balance for better sleep:

  • Sleep Pressure (The "Tiredness Tank"): Fills up during wakeful activities. Good naps empty it just enough; poor naps mean the tank overflows by bedtime, causing overtired fussiness.
  • Body Clock (The "Day/Night Timer"): Strengthened by daylight, darkness, and consistent routines. It tells the body when to release sleep hormones.
  • Total Daily Sleep: The amount of sleep your baby needs across naps and night sleep.

Soothing the Self

"Self-soothing" isn't a switch you flip. It's a skill, like rolling or babbling, that emerges as your baby's brain matures. As a caregiver, you’re creating the space for it to develop.

What’s developing on the inside?

  • Brain connections: The parts of the brain that manage emotions and transitions get stronger.
  • Body awareness: They discover their hands and can find a thumb. Cuddling a soft toy or blanket comes later, once they are past their first birthday and it is safe in the crib.
  • Trust in predictability: Knowing what comes next ("after my song, it's sleep time") is deeply calming.

The last stretch from awake to asleep is the part they practice. I'd give them the chance to do some of it themselves, without turning that into a rule about exactly how awake they should be when you put them down.

Consistency, Consistency, Consistency

Consistency revolves around predictable patterns. Your baby's brain loves predictability. Repeating the same calm steps before sleep reduces uncertainty and helps their brain recognize, "Ah, this is what we do for sleep".

  • Reduces guesswork: A clear routine means your baby isn't left wondering what's coming next.
  • Builds confidence: With predictability comes a sense of security, which lowers stress hormones.
  • Strengthens the new "script": Every time you follow the new routine, you make the new sleep association stronger.

Crisis & Change

Change is hard, even for adults. When you change the familiar sleep script, your baby will likely protest as a way of communicating. It's crucial to distinguish this normal frustration from overwhelming distress.

Behind bedtime protests:

  • Learning signs: Protest often means your baby is actively working to figure out the new rules.
  • Short-lived in nature: Some sleep intervention studies show that protest crying and night waking often decrease over several nights when a consistent method is used.

Sleep cements the learning of new skills. During sleep, your baby's brain actively practices and strengthens the new skills they encounter, like their budding self-soothing abilities.

  • Practice makes permanent: Neural pathways used during the day (including new sleep routines) are rehearsed and strengthened.
  • Memory consolidation: The steps of the new bedtime routine move from "new and awkward" to "familiar and automatic."
  • Emotional processing: The security felt during your consistent routine is reinforced.
