At last. Two naps, every day. After weeks of seesawing between two and three, there's finally a rhythm you can count on. This stability is the hallmark of The Steady Highlands.

What the stable schedule can look like:

Morning nap: mid-morning, 60-120 minutes

Afternoon nap: early afternoon, 60-120 minutes

Bedtime: an early-evening bedtime, consistent night after night

Night sleep: 10.5-12 hours, with 0-2 wakings

Why this matters: The predictability of this stage allows for something new: fine-tuning. Small adjustments now have meaningful, predictable impacts. A 15-minute shift in a wake window, a slightly earlier bedtime: these matter in ways they couldn't before.

The margins get small here. I'd say a fifteen-minute change can be the difference between a good nap and a short one. Babies also wake more often than parents notice, because by now a lot of those wakings resolve without anyone being called.

One Last Wobble

You might have noticed that arriving in The Steady Highlands doesn't always mean the ground is steady right away. The eight to ten month sleep leap often lands around the same time, and it can disrupt night sleep and nap quality even while the nap count holds at two.

What's driving this sleep leap:

Unlike the sleep leap in Grand Vulcana (which was a permanent architectural rewire), this one is caused by what your baby is learning to do and it resolves as those skills settle. The leap typically lasts 2-6 weeks.

  • Cognitive leap: Object permanence solidifies completely
  • Separation anxiety peaks: Baby now fully understands you exist when you leave

The Fine-Tuning Zone

In The Steady Highlands, wake windows have settled into a predictable pattern. The margins are small, but that means you can fine-tune with precision.

The usual pattern:

First window of the day: Shortest (2.5-3 hours)

Second window: Medium (3-3.5 hours)

Last window before bed: Longest (3.5-4 hours)

This pattern reflects your baby's circadian rhythm at its most mature so far. The body knows that sleep pressure builds slowly in the morning and needs to be highest at bedtime.

A very long morning nap can borrow from the afternoon one. I'd think of fine-tuning as balancing the two against each other rather than maximizing either.

Deep and Restorative

As the regression resolves (typically over 2-6 weeks), genuine night sleep stability arrives. Most babies in The Steady Highlands sleep 10.5-12 hours with 0-1 night wakings.

What night sleep can look like:

Bedtime: early evening, remarkably consistent

Night wakings: 0-2, with many babies sleeping through consistently

Night feeds: 0-1 for most, though some continue to need one feed

Total night sleep: 10.5-12 hours

The first stretch: Many babies now have a longest sleep stretch of 5–8 hours, though this varies considerably.

Cruising, Standing, and First Steps

This stage is packed with motor achievements. Cruising along furniture (9-10 months), standing independently (10-12 months), and first steps for some babies are all happening. And of course, they practice these skills in the crib too.

A brief chance to work it out themselves does more for motor development than a quick rescue, and when they do need you I'd keep it calm and boring. The mattress goes down as soon as they can pull to stand. That one is not optional.

Separation Anxiety at Its Peak

Separation anxiety is often prominent during this stage and may peak anywhere from 10 to 18 months, with wide individual variation. Your baby now has full object permanence. They know you exist when you leave, but still don't fully understand that you'll return.

  • Memory is stronger: They remember you were there and notice your absence
  • Emotional regulation is developing but still immature
  • Time perception is limited: "Later" has no meaning, absence feels permanent

  • Something of yours that carries your scent can help during the day. It stays out of the crib until after the first birthday

A True Friend

The AAP recommends keeping all soft objects out of the crib for the entire first year. Comfort objects should be used during awake time and the bedtime routine, then removed before placing baby in the crib, until after the first birthday.

  • Circadian rhythm naturally promotes wakefulness as morning light approaches
  • Sleep pressure is lowest after a full night's sleep
  • Morning nap may be too early, reinforcing the early wake time
  • room may not be dark enough as light inhibits continued sleep
  • Hunger can play a role if last feed was early

These are gentle approaches and they ask for patience. I'll be straight with you though: gradually shifting the first nap later has not been formally studied, so that one is experience rather than evidence.

When Small Changes Matter Most

This is the stage where fine-tuning works. A 15-minute shift in a wake window, a slightly earlier or later bedtime can have meaningful, predictable impacts. This is the longest stretch of sleep predictability in the first two years.

What you can fine-tune:

The 15-minute rule: Make one small adjustment at a time, wait 3-5 days to see the effect, then adjust again if needed. Small, patient changes are more effective than big overhauls.

  • Wake windows: Adjust in 15-minute increments based on your baby's cues
  • Nap timing: Shift naps gradually to address early mornings or bedtime battles

  • A day where only one nap happened (sick day, travel, or just a fluke)

What these signs mean: These are early tremors. Most babies aren't ready to fully drop to one nap just yet. For now, these signs just mean your baby is maturing, not that it's time to transition.

  • First nap is very long (2+ hours) and second nap is consistently skipped
