The Circadian Rhythm Activates
By the end of this stage, something fundamental shifts. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (your baby's master clock) begins receiving and responding to light signals. Melatonin production initiates. For the first time, your baby has a biological distinction between day and night.

What this means for sleep:
- Temperature first
- Cortisol and melatonin follow
- Sleep rhythm consolidation is the last to arrive.
- A "preferred" bedtime starts to appear, though it may still drift, and it often falls later in the evening than parents expect
- The longest sleep stretch may begin shifting toward nighttime
- Day and night are finally differentiating (but it's an ongoing process)
Connection Changes Everything
Around 6-8 weeks, something magical happens: the social smile emerges. Unlike newborn reflex smiles, these are intentional, responsive, and directed at you. This milestone transforms your relationship, and it also changes how your baby experiences the world, including sleep.
- The social smile indicates the baby is now actively engaging with their environment
- Eye contact becomes sustained and meaningful
- The baby starts recognizing familiar faces and voices
- They're more alert, more engaged, and more interested in surroundings during wake windows
- A more engaged baby is harder to settle when overstimulated
- They may resist sleep because the world is suddenly interesting
- Your presence becomes a source of comfort and sometimes distraction
DouloresThose first smiles are hard to resist, and I'd still keep night interactions calm and boring. It is what makes the difference between day and night legible to a baby who is only just learning there is one.
Catnapping
If your 2-4 month old is taking 30-45 minute naps, you're not alone. This is called catnapping, and it's a common nap pattern at this age.
Why catnapping happens:
At this stage, babies typically haven't developed the ability to link sleep cycles fully. One nap usually lasts 30-45 minutes. When it ends, they wake and often can't transition smoothly to the next cycle without help.
- Short naps are developmentally normal right now
- It's not a problem to fix, it resolves as the brain matures
- Some babies may need help resettling; others won't
DouloresShort naps at this age are not a problem you have failed to solve. Nap length actually dips between one and five months before it climbs again. Linking one sleep cycle to the next is a skill that arrives later, and I would not expect it yet.
Building Alertness
As your baby's nervous system matures, their capacity for alertness grows. Wake windows, the time they can comfortably stay awake between sleeps, lengthen predictably during this period.
- Misty Jungle: 45-90 minutes
- Shimmering Shallows: 75-120 minutes
- Grand Vulcana: 90-150 minutes
- Adenosine (the chemical that builds sleep pressure) accumulates more slowly as the brain matures
- The nervous system becomes more regulated and less easily overwhelmed
- Alertness is a skill that develops with practice

A Preferred Bedtime Emerges
One of the most exciting developments in this stage is the emergence of a "preferred" bedtime, a time when your baby naturally gravitates toward their longest sleep stretch.
What the research shows:
As the circadian rhythm strengthens, babies begin consolidating sleep toward nighttime. However, at 2-4 months, this bedtime often falls late in the evening, later than many parents expect.
- The circadian system is still maturing
- Melatonin rise may occur later in the evening
- Newborn patterns haven't fully shifted
- This gradually resolves over the coming months
- Expose baby to bright morning light to help shift the clock earlier
- Keep evenings dim and calm
- Be patient as bedtime will gradually move earlier on its own
DouloresIf you want to nudge bedtime earlier, morning light is the strongest lever I know of. It works slowly, and it works.
Night Wakings: Still Frequent, But Changing
At 2-4 months, night wakings remain frequent (typically 2-4 per night). But something is changing. The wakings may be more predictable, and longer consolidated stretches are beginning to appear.
What's different now:
- Wakings may cluster more predictably
- The first stretch of night sleep is often the longest
- Babies may begin showing preference for parental soothing

The 4-Nap Structure
At this stage, most babies settle into a loose structure of 4-5 naps per day. The naps aren't predictable yet, but a pattern is emerging: morning, midday, afternoon, and a late catnap or two.
- Morning nap: 1-2 hours after wake, 30-60 minutes
- Midday nap: Late morning, 30-90 minutes
- Afternoon nap: Mid-afternoon, 30-60 minutes
- Evening catnap: Late afternoon/early evening, 30-45 minutes
- The evening catnap is the first to come under pressure as babies approach 4 months
- Some babies will transition to 3 naps toward the end of this stage

Let's name what you might be feeling in The Shimmering Shallows, because it's a unique kind of challenge: the almost-pattern.

- You may wonder if you're missing something or doing something wrong
- Sleep advice from friends and the internet starts to feel contradictory
What the research says:
Parental stress during this period is normal and well-documented. The transition to parenthood involves identity shifts, hormonal changes, and relationship adjustments. Sleep deprivation amplifies all of it.

Head Control and Hand-to-Mouth
While rolling typically happens closer in the Grand Vulcana, this stage is full of smaller motor milestones that change the quality of awake time.
- Improved head control: Baby can reposition slightly during sleep
- Hands to mouth: Self-soothing begins (thumb sucking emerges)
- Reaching and batting: More active during wake windows
- Early rolling attempts: May startle themselves in sleep
- Your baby is doing things now, not just existing
- More active wake periods build healthy sleep pressure
- Self-soothing through thumb/hand sucking may begin to emerge

When It's Time to Leave

The pattern is still loose here, and reading it while it is loose is the skill that lasts.
The Shimmering Shallows fundamentals:
- The circadian clock switches on: Melatonin production begins at around 9 weeks. Until then, your baby has had no biological distinction between day and night.
- Catnapping is normal: 30-45 minute naps dominate because sleep cycle linking hasn't developed yet
- Wake windows lengthen: 60-120 minutes, growing with neurological maturity
- A bedtime emerges but may be late: a late-evening bedtime is common; morning light helps shift it earlier
- The almost-pattern is real: Inconsistency is developmentally expected, not a parenting failure
- Self-soothing begins: Thumb-sucking and hand-to-mouth behaviors emerge as first self-regulation tools
