What are wake windows?

Wake windows are a practical and popular framework used to help structure daytime sleep by understanding your baby's rapidly developing brain capacity and maturing internal clock (circadian rhythm). However, there are no universally established medical standards for wake windows. What works for one family may not work for another.

Tips for the Last Window for Sleep

It's typically the longest and requires the most mindful structure to ensure sleep pressure has built adequately. The goal is a gradual, predictable decrease in stimulation.

The ideal last window flow:

  • Energize Phase: Focus on essentials. Offer a full feed in bright light, change diapers, and allow gentle cuddles as they fully wake up.
  • Engage Phase:Time for high-quality interaction. This is ideal for tummy time, play, calming outdoor light, and social engagement. Avoid overstimulating activities.
  • Wind Down Phase (Longer & More Gradual): For babies in the Grand Vulcana stage and beyond, a feed doesn’t necessarily need to occur as part of the bedtime routine. For younger babies, include feeding as part of your flow. Implement a consistent, multi-step bedtime routine (e.g., bath, massage, book, song). This repetitive sequence becomes a powerful sleep cue.
  • Environment: Dim lights significantly, reduce noise and playful interaction. The message should be clear: day is ending.
