The 3-to-2 Nap Transition: A Slow Unraveling

Most babies consolidate to two naps between 9 and 12 months, though some begin the transition earlier. Unlike earlier transitions, this one unfolds slowly over weeks, sometimes months. The third nap, a short late-afternoon "bridge," gradually unravels as your baby's stamina grows.

Signs the third nap is under pressure:

  • Fighting the late afternoon nap consistently
  • Taking a very long time to fall asleep for it
  • Third nap pushes bedtime late into the evening
  • Baby seems content with longer afternoon windows

During a nap transition I'd let bedtime come earlier. It is the thing that stops a short day turning into an overtired night.

Building Stamina

As your baby's brain matures, their capacity for alertness continues to grow. Wake windows lengthen significantly during this stage, reflecting increasing brain stamina. The pattern that emerges: the first window of the day is often shortest, while the afternoon window before bed is longest. Individual babies vary; some need shorter windows, some longer.

Typical wake windows by age:

  • 6 months: 2-2.5 hours
  • 7 months: 2.25-3 hours
  • 8 months: 2.5-3.25 hours
  • 9 months: 2.5-3.5 hours

Longer, More Predictable Night Sleep

Despite the nap transition chaos, night sleep actually consolidates during this stage. By 9 months, most babies sleep 10-12 hours at night with 0-2 wakings.

What night sleep looks like:

  • Bedtime becomes more consistent, settling into the early evening
  • Night feedings may drop to 0-1 for many babies
  • 8-9 months: 0-2 wakings, 10.5-12 hours total
  • Some babies begin sleeping through the night consistently

Worth knowing: in research, sleeping through the night often means a five-hour stretch without signaling, not ten to twelve unbroken hours. Night feeds have a wide range of normal, and I'd take your doctor's read on your baby over any number I could give you.

Sitting Pretty

Between 6 and 8 months, most babies achieve independent sitting. Physical milestones like sitting up on their own transforms how babies experience the world and how they experience sleep.

Why sitting disrupts sleep: babies practice new skills compulsively, including in the crib. The world looks completely different from this new vantage point, and your baby may resist lying down for sleep when sitting is so exciting. They may also wake during the night and sit up, then not know how to get back down.

  • 7-8 months: Sits independently for extended periods
  • 8-9 months: Transitions in and out of sitting

Mobility Changes the Game

Crawling typically emerges between 7 and 9 months, and it's a game-changer for sleep. Mobile babies practice their new skills everywhere, including in the crib at 2 a.m.

  • 8-9 months: Hands-and-knees crawling (full mobility arrives)

Separation Anxiety Arrives

Between 8 and 10 months, separation anxiety peaks. This isn't a sleep problem but a cognitive milestone. Your baby now understands that you exist when you leave, but doesn't yet understand that you'll come back.

How it shows up at sleep times: bedtime becomes harder as baby cries when you leave, night wakings may increase as they search for you, only the "right" parent (usually primary caregiver) will do, and stranger anxiety may appear simultaneously.

  • Full object permanence: Baby knows you continue to exist when out of sight
  • Memory maturation: They remember you were there and notice your absence
  • Emotional regulation developing: They feel the distress but can't yet manage it alone
  • Understanding of time is still developing: brief separations may feel much longer to your baby

A Bridge to Security

During this stage, many babies develop attachments to comfort objects: a soft toy, a blanket, a lovey. This is a positive developmental sign, not a problem to prevent.

  • Self-soothing tool: Provides comfort when parents aren't immediately available
  • Security signal: Familiar scent and texture signal safety
  • Sleep association: Becomes a positive cue for sleep onset

  • Choose small, breathable options
  • Ensure object is safely constructed
  • Let baby develop attachment naturally instead of forcing a specific object

A lovey starting to mean something is a good sign, and I'd let that attachment form in your arms rather than in the crib. Loose objects stay out of the sleep space until after twelve months. That part is not a judgment call.

Solids: A New Variable

Between 6 and 9 months, most babies begin solid foods. This introduction changes the feeding-sleep dynamic in important ways.

  • Digestion patterns shift: Solids take longer to digest than milk
  • Satiety increases: Some babies sleep longer after solid meals
  • New foods, new reactions: Digestive adjustment can temporarily disrupt sleep

By the end of this stage, most babies have fully transitioned to two naps. The third nap, that short late-afternoon bridge, has unraveled completely.

  • No late-afternoon meltdowns: Baby handles afternoon well without third nap

  • Morning nap: mid-morning, 60-120 minutes

  • Bedtime: early evening, giving 10.5-12 hours overnight

Leaving Weaver’s Hollow

Two naps become a question you answer daily. A few things stay steady underneath it.

Weaver's Hollow fundamentals:

  • The 3-to-2 transition takes weeks: Alternating 2- and 3-nap days is normal. The third nap slowly unravels
  • Wake windows lengthen: 2.5-3.5 hours, with the last window typically longest
